Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Audio Editing Basics

  • What It Can Do:

    • Reduce background noise, hums, and pops for cleaner audio.

    • Balance the volume between speakers and segments for a consistent listening experience.

    • Enhance vocal clarity with EQ adjustments, compression, and limiting.

    • Minimize distracting filler words like “um” and “uh” upon request.

    • Add professional touches, like seamless transitions and polished intro/outro music.

    What it Can’t Do:

    • Completely eliminate severe noise or distortion if it overwhelms the original recording.

    • Fix poorly recorded audio that’s too quiet, clipped, or recorded in an echo-heavy environment.

    • Change the content of your recording (e.g., rephrasing or adding dialogue).

    • Make basic equipment sound like studio-grade gear—though editing can significantly improve quality!

Pro Tip: High-quality recordings provide the best results. Clean input = polished output!

  • Choose a Quiet Space: Record in a room with minimal background noise and echo. Use soft furnishings or blankets to absorb sound.

Invest in Quality Equipment: A good microphone, even a budget-friendly one, will make a big difference. Check out our Suggested Setups page for suggestions!

Check Your Levels: Ensure your voice isn’t too quiet or too loud to avoid distortion. Aim for a consistent input level without peaking into the red.

Use a Pop Filter: A simple pop filter helps reduce plosive sounds (like “P” and “B”) and keeps your audio smooth.

Minimize Movement: Avoid handling the microphone or making loud, unnecessary movements while recording.

Test Your Setup: Do a short test recording and listen back before diving into your session. Adjust as needed to ensure clean audio.

Hydrate and Warm Up: Drink water and warm up your voice to prevent harsh or scratchy tones.

Remember: The clearer your raw audio, the more impactful the editing can be.

  • To get the best results when recording with a guest, it’s important to record on two separate tracks. This allows each voice to be edited individually, which helps balance volume levels, reduce background noise, and make your final podcast sound professional.

If you’re recording remotely, platforms like Riverside, Zencastr, or Zoom (with multitrack enabled) are great options. For in-person recordings, using an audio interface with two microphone inputs is the way to go.

My recommended audio interface can be found under the Pro-Level Suggested Setup page.

Workflow and Communication

  • The standard turnaround time for podcast editing depends on the length of your episode. As a general rule, each minute of audio takes approximately 4 minutes of editing time. For example:

A 30-minute episode may take about 2 hours of editing time.

A 1-hour episode may take around 4 hours of editing time.

    Typical Turnaround Times:

Episodes under 30 minutes: 3 business days.

Episodes 30 minutes to 1 hour: 5 business days.

As a disabled creative, I prioritize delivering high-quality work while accommodating my health. If unforeseen circumstances arise, I will communicate promptly to keep you informed and ensure we stay on track.

  • Each project includes two rounds of revisions, which are typically enough to ensure your podcast sounds exactly the way you want it. If you need additional changes after the included revisions, I’m happy to help! Additional revisions are charged at a flat rate of $20 per round.

To make the revision process as smooth as possible, I recommend compiling all your feedback at once during each revision round. This helps ensure we stay on track and avoid unnecessary delays.

  • Currently, I use Dropbox for file transfers. After booking a project, I’ll share a secure Dropbox folder where you can upload your audio files. This ensures your files are stored safely and accessible for editing.

If you have specific preferences or need help with the upload process, let me know! I’m happy to guide you through it. Once the files are ready, I’ll deliver the final edited audio back to you in the same folder.

  • I currently accept MP3 or WAV files for editing. However, if your files are in a different format, please reach out and I’ll confirm compatibility or guide you on converting them.

For final delivery, I provide your audio as a high-quality MP3 file, ensuring a balance between file size and audio clarity. If you prefer another format, like WAV, let me know, and we can discuss options.
